Today, the Auditor General of Canada (AG) released his report on the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (FFMC), confirming what we’ve all known for years.

In addition to determining that the Corporation had no long-term strategy, the AG found “many weaknesses,” “significant deficiencies,” and “failures” in the oversight, management, and operation of the Corporation, which resulted in lower returns to fishers.

The Strategy to Revitalize the Great Slave Lake Commercial Fishery, released earlier this year by the GNWT, calls for the NWT to cut ties with the FFMC after we build a local fish processing plant and develop markets. The AG’s report is a reminder that we need to get on with this work sooner than later.
